England fan Sean Carrington amends World Cup tattoo after Argentina loss
Sean Carrington, a 36‑year‑old English football fan, had a leg tattoo inked with the World Cup trophy and the words “England World Cup Winner 2026” after England’s 2‑1 round‑of‑32 victory over DR Congo. The tattoo cost about £550. When England were eliminated 2‑1 by Argentina in the semi‑final, Carrington returned to Holy Trinity Tattoo Studio in Standish to add the phrase “Just joking” beneath the original text. The studio said the correction would normally cost around £100 but was provided free of charge.
In an interview with the BBC, Carrington said he was more upset about England’s defeat than about the tattoo and does not regret the original design. He noted the incident highlights why tattoo artists advise clients to wait for a tournament’s outcome before committing to permanent football‑related artwork.
