England heat alerts: 41% of adults fail to take protective action

A study by the United Nations University’s Institute for Water, Environment and Health reveals that 41 percent of adults in England who received formal heat alerts took no protective action. While 70 percent of adults reported seeing a heat alert, many failed to act due to a lack of perceived personal risk rather than confusion.

Research indicates that only 18 percent of the population perceives heat as a high risk, and approximately 30 percent report knowing little about how to protect themselves. Lead author Dr. Mehri Khosravi noted a cultural tendency to view heat as ‘good weather’ or a risk applicable only to the very old and ill.

The findings come after a summer of extreme temperatures in England, including record-breaking heat in June and August. The study suggests that current warning systems may be designed more for institutional coordination than for prompting effective individual behavioral changes.
