UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham launches £343m plan for 159 community mental health centres

The UK government has announced a £343 million investment to create 159 new NHS mental health centres across England, described as the biggest redesign of mental health services in a generation. One hundred walk‑in community hubs will be located in high‑street venues such as libraries and banks, while 59 dedicated mental health emergency departments will be added within hospitals, bringing the total of specialist crisis units to 82. The first sites are slated to open in autumn 2026, with further facilities expected from March 2027. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and Health Secretary Yvette Cooper said the scheme will provide “support earlier, closer to home” and act as a lifeline for thousands waiting months for help in overcrowded A&E departments. Specific locations mentioned include 30 hubs in London, four new centres in Portsmouth, two in Greater Manchester and additional sites throughout the country, all aimed at reducing pressure on hospitals and improving early intervention for mental health conditions.
