UK launches free MenB vaccine programme for university entrants

NHS England is rolling out a one‑off MenB vaccination programme aimed at roughly one million 17‑ and 18‑year‑olds in their final year of sixth form and all students under 25 who will start university or residential further‑education colleges this autumn. Appointments can be booked at participating high‑street pharmacies from 20 July, with two doses required at least 28 days apart.

The drive follows a severe meningococcal B outbreak in Kent that caused two deaths and was described as the fastest‑growing cluster in the UK. Health officials say first‑year university students face a risk about seven times higher than peers who are not in higher education. The vaccine is supplied centrally at no cost to recipients, and pharmacies will be reimbursed for each dose administered.

NHS director of vaccination Caroline Temmink warned, “Heading off to university is an exciting time, but it’s also when the risk of MenB disease is higher… so, before you pack your bags, take a few minutes to get your meningitis jab.” Consultant epidemiologist Dr Shamez Ladhani added that completing both doses over the summer will provide robust protection for students and their families.
