England measles outbreak kills two children, prompting urgent vaccine alert

Two children have died from measles in England in 2026, a reminder of the disease's seriousness, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). The agency reported 736 laboratory‑confirmed cases between 1 January and 8 June, up from 959 cases recorded for the whole of 2025, with concentrations in London and the West Midlands.

UKHSA epidemiologists urged parents to ensure their children are up to date with the MMR or MMRV vaccine, describing it as the best protection against the highly contagious illness. Catch‑up vaccinations are available through GP practices for anyone who missed earlier doses, regardless of age. Health Secretary James Murray called the deaths a "heartbreaking reminder" that measles is not a harmless childhood illness and stressed the need for higher vaccine uptake.

The NHS also highlighted lesser‑known symptoms such as red, watery eyes and small white spots inside the mouth, aiming to improve early detection and prevent further severe outcomes.
