England names squad for Pakistan Test series, Cox replaces injured Bethell

England has announced a 16‑man squad for the first two Tests of its home series against Pakistan, which begins on 19 August at Headingley. Jacob Bethell is ruled out after a right‑knee injury sustained during the recent ODI series with India, and Jordan Cox will take the No. 3 batting position.

Dan Lawrence has been recalled after a two‑year absence and will bat at No. 6, rewarded for an outstanding County Championship season in which he scored five centuries and 788 runs for Surrey. Veteran batter Ollie Pope returns to the side as a utility wicket‑keeper‑batter after being dropped following the Ashes defeat in Australia.

Other selections include pacers Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Ollie Robinson, and spinner Shoaib Bashir, with Joe Root captaining England for a second spell. Interim head coach Marcus Trescothick will oversee the series before former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming assumes the full‑time red‑ball role. Pakistan will be led by captain Babar Azam.
