England reaches World Cup 2026 knockout stage as Turkey keeps unofficial champion title

England qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup knockout phase by winning Group L with seven points, including a draw with Ghana and victories over Croatia and Panama. The team will meet Democratic Republic of Congo, the winner of Group K, in the round of 32 in Atlanta. England, ranked 46th globally, conceded only three goals in the group stage and fielded several Premier League players such as Yoane Wissa, Aaron Wan‑Bissaka, Axel Tuanzebe and Arthur Masuaku.

Separately, the informal "unofficial world champion" title in football remains with Turkey. The honor passes when the current holder is defeated; Turkey regained it after beating the United States 3‑2 in its final group match despite finishing last in its group and being eliminated. Turkey will retain the title until its next international fixture on 25 September against France, where a French victory would make them both official and unofficial world champions.
