England reports highest giardiasis infection rates since 2016

Health officials in England have issued warnings regarding a rise in giardiasis, a parasitic infection caused by Giardia intestinalis. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) reported 6,069 laboratory-confirmed infections in 2025, an 11.4% increase from the previous year and the highest annual case count since 2016.

While cases are linked to travel in Asia, Africa, and South America, officials note the infection can be contracted domestically. Potential drivers for the spike include increased post-pandemic travel, improved testing, and climate change. The infection spreads through contact with infected people or animals, contaminated food or water, and contaminated surfaces.

Symptoms can be severe and persistent, lasting from a week to several months. Common indicators include diarrhea, stomach cramps, bloating, weight loss, and flatulence. Health experts warn that the condition can cause serious complications, particularly in young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. To reduce risk, officials recommend thorough handwashing, avoiding swallowing water while swimming, and practicing strict food and water hygiene when traveling.
