England right‑back Reece James sidelined by hamstring injury for World Cup group games

Chelsea captain Reece James has suffered a recurring hamstring problem that will keep him out of England’s next two World Cup group matches, including the finale against Panama, and could also rule him out of the first knockout round. The injury follows a recent calf strain to fellow full‑back Tino Livramento, leaving England with a thin pool of specialists in that area. Coach Thomas Tuchel confirmed James is on an accelerated rehabilitation programme but stressed the squad must cope without him for the immediate fixtures.

James’ absence sharpens concerns about England’s full‑back options. Besides James and Livramento, the only pure right‑backs selected were Djed Spence, while the left‑back department can draw on players such as Nico O’Reilly, Dan Burn and other centre‑backs who can be deployed wider. Tuchel expressed confidence in the team’s versatility, noting that the squad has enough quality to adjust tactics despite the setbacks.

The injury adds to James’ injury‑laden recent seasons, having missed over 100 games since 2022. His fitness will be monitored closely as England aim to progress beyond the group stage.
