England rugby players call for RFU overseas selection policy change

England rugby players Ellis Genge and Courtney Lawes are advocating for a change to the Rugby Football Union (RFU) selection policy regarding overseas-based players. Currently, players competing in foreign leagues are generally ineligible for national selection, a rule intended to protect the Gallagher Premiership and maintain coach control.

Genge, who has discussed the matter with RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney, suggests an exemption based on international experience. He proposed a cap-based threshold, such as 50 or 60 caps, which would allow established internationals to play abroad without losing their place in the England squad. Genge cited football stars like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane as examples of how playing in different leagues can improve a player's performance.

Courtney Lawes also supported the idea of a compromise, noting that Wales utilizes a 25-cap rule to allow overseas players to remain eligible. Lawes argued that such a policy would allow young players to develop within the English system before potentially moving abroad while still remaining available for national duty.
