England Tightens Recycling Rules, Limits Fridge Drops in Somerset

Somerset Council and its recycling operator Biffa have introduced a temporary limit on household fridge, freezer and other cooling‑appliance recycling. From August, each household may drop only one such item at any of Somerset’s 16 recycling sites. The measure responds to a national shortage of reprocessing capacity caused by a fire and other unplanned outages at specialist treatment facilities, compounded by higher summer demand. Councillor Federica Smith‑Roberts said the restriction is needed to keep sites operating safely and fairly while the specialist network recovers, and urged residents to store appliances where possible, use retailer take‑back schemes, or consider reuse and donation.

At the same time, England’s broader “Simpler Recycling” reforms under the Environment Act 2021 have taken effect, banning a range of kitchen items from household recycling bins. New rules prohibit drinking glasses, glass cookware, ceramic crockery, cutlery and certain pots and pans from being placed in recycling collections, directing them to general waste or alternative disposal routes such as scrap‑metal centres or charity donations. Some local authorities remain exempt from the changes until as late as 2040, so residents are advised to check their council’s specific guidance.
