England to allow 24/7 free bus travel for disabled people

The UK government has announced that eligible disabled people across England will be granted unlimited free bus travel 24 hours a day, seven days a week, starting from April 1, 2027. This policy removes current time restrictions that typically limit concessionary pass usage to between 9:30 am and 11:00 pm on weekdays.

Supported by £60 million in funding, the initiative aims to eliminate the “postcode lottery” regarding travel access and assist with the cost of living. The move follows similar local initiatives, such as those implemented by the Greater Manchester Combined Authority. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated the change is intended to unlock access to employment, education, and healthcare.

Local authorities, including the Telford & Wrekin Council, have welcomed the announcement, noting it will provide a genuine difference for disabled residents within their boroughs.
