England to implement nationwide SMA newborn screening by 2027

England is scheduled to implement nationwide newborn screening for Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) in October 2027. The condition, a rare inherited neuromuscular disorder caused by mutations in the SMN1 gene, will be added to the National Health Service (NHS) newborn blood spot screening program. This initiative aims to facilitate earlier diagnosis and treatment before clinical symptoms appear, which is critical for improving patient outcomes.

The rollout will begin with an evaluation phase involving seven laboratories before expanding to all 13 NHS newborn screening laboratories for full national coverage.

In Wales, political leaders and advocates are urging the Welsh Government to follow England’s lead. Following a campaign by former singer Jesy Nelson, whose daughters were diagnosed with SMA, Welsh Conservatives have called for ministers to match England's plans. While England moves forward, the Welsh Government stated it is currently awaiting further advice from the UK National Screening Committee (NSC), which has not yet recommended routine newborn screening for the condition.
