England Women's squad named for World Cup play-off against Greece
England manager Sarina Wiegman has announced the 23-player squad for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying play-off against Greece. The selection features several notable changes, including the maiden senior international call-up for Chelsea’s Lexi Potter and the return of Leah Williamson following an injury absence.
In a move emphasizing performance-based selection, Wiegman omitted Chloe Kelly and Ella Toone from the squad. Wiegman stated that “the levels weren’t what I expect from them on the pitch” and noted the intense competition for places. While Kelly was also being managed following a hamstring injury, Wiegman expressed belief in both players' ability to respond to the decision.
The play-off tie consists of two legs. The first leg will take place at Pankritio Stadium in Greece on October 9, 2026, followed by the return leg at King Power Stadium in Leicester on October 13, 2026. The winner of this tie will advance to the second play-off round to face either Slovakia or Ukraine.
