English proficiency levels in Brazil highlight workplace challenges

Brazil ranks 75th out of 123 countries in the EF English Proficiency Index 2025, with its proficiency level classified as low. Data from the study, which analyzed 2.2 million adults, highlights a gap between skills: Brazil scored 516 in reading but only 464 in speaking.

In the professional sphere, a Pearson survey indicates that 32% of Brazilians use English daily at work, while 52% use it at least once a week. Furthermore, 70% of respondents believe better English mastery would facilitate their job performance.

André Belz, CEO of Rockfeller Language Center, suggests that fluency in high-pressure environments should focus on maintaining communication rather than achieving error-free speech. He emphasizes that being able to ask for clarification, rephrase ideas, and navigate difficulties is essential for professional confidence and improvisation during meetings.
