English Whisky secures protected Geographical Indication status

English Whisky has officially secured protected Geographical Indication (GI) status, legally recognizing it as a distinct spirit category alongside Scotch, Welsh, and Irish whiskies. The designation, confirmed by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), establishes strict regulations requiring any spirit labeled as ‘English Whisky’ to be produced entirely from UK cereal grains and to be mashed, fermented, distilled, and matured within England.

The sector has seen rapid growth, with the number of operational distilleries increasing from 46 in 2023 to more than 70. Industry estimates value the maturing stocks held in casks across England at approximately £1 billion. The English Whisky Guild led the application process to protect the provenance and quality of the spirit.

Regional producers, including those in North Yorkshire such as Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery, Whittaker’s Distillery, and Ellers Farm Distillery, have welcomed the milestone. The status is expected to support local communities by protecting skilled jobs and reinforcing the connection between distillation and British farming infrastructure.
