Eni begins commissioning Meleiha gas project in Egypt
Eni has announced the commencement of startup operations for the second phase of the Meleiha gas project in Egypt's Western Desert. Developed by Agiba Petroleum Company—a joint venture between Eni and the state-owned Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC)—the project aims to bolster domestic energy supplies.
The new facility is designed to process up to 100 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, which is approximately 2.8 million cubic meters. The infrastructure includes production wells, collection networks, and a dedicated pipeline to connect the field to Egypt's existing gas network.
This development arrives as Egypt faces a domestic gas supply crisis. National production has declined since its 2021 peak, and output from the major Zohr offshore field has fallen significantly, increasing the country's reliance on costly liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. While the commissioning marks a major industrial milestone, the exact date for the start of commercial production and the actual daily volume delivered to the grid remain to be determined.
