Eni employees seek plea bargains in Calenzano depot explosion case
Six employees of the energy company Eni have requested plea bargains totaling 14 years and 6 months in prison regarding the explosion at the fuel depot in Calenzano. The incident, which resulted in five deaths and 27 injuries, also caused significant damage to company structures, vehicles, and nearby homes.
The Prato Prosecutor's Office has expressed a favorable opinion on the requests, citing the adequacy of the proposed sentences and the compensation provided by Eni to the victims' families. The specific requests include:
• Luigi Cullurà: 2 years and 9 months • Carlo Di Perna: 2 years and 6 months • Emanuela Proietti: 2 years and 5 months • Marco Bini: 2 years and 3 months • Andrea Strafelini: 2 years and 3 months • Elio Ferrara: 2 years (with a request for a conditional suspension)
For the first five individuals, legal counsel has requested the replacement of prison time with community service. The charges involve multiple counts of manslaughter and negligent disaster. The plea bargain does not constitute an admission of guilt and awaits judicial approval. Three other individuals—Francesco Cirone, Enrico Cerbino, and Luigi Murno—face requests for trial as their cases are not part of this plea agreement.
