Albania: PM Rama claims drone attack attempt amid violent protests

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has claimed that authorities neutralized an explosive-laden drone two days ago that was intended to target the government building in Tirana and set its courtyard on fire. Rama alleged that the incident was orchestrated by “foreign hands,” specifically accusing Iran of spreading disinformation to destabilize the country and hinder Albania’s goal of joining the European Union by 2030. He also noted potential influence from Russia.

The claims have met with skepticism from opposition leaders. Sali Berisha, leader of the Democratic Party, dismissed the drone story as a “fictional movie” and called for Rama’s resignation, citing government corruption. Meanwhile, within the ruling Socialist Party, Elisa Spiropali issued an open letter urging Rama to seek political accountability and internal reform rather than relying on repression to handle the ongoing unrest.

The protests, which have entered their sixth day, were sparked by student dissatisfaction regarding high education costs and corruption. The demonstrations have escalated into violent clashes in Tirana, involving stone-throwing and Molotov cocktails, resulting in damage to government buildings and injuries to both police and protesters. In response to the rising violence, elite RENEA special forces have been deployed to protect the Prime Minister’s office.
