Enna begins celebrations for centenary as provincial capital
The city of Enna has commenced celebrations marking the centenary of its designation as a provincial capital. The festivities began on Friday, October 16, at the Teatro Francesco Paolo Neglia.
To mark the occasion, Pietrangelo Buttafuoco, president of the Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia, will deliver a keynote lecture. Buttafuoco, a journalist and writer with roots in the region, is also set to receive an honorary degree from Kore University.
The anniversary highlights a historical paradox: the city's status was granted via a 1926 telegram from Benito Mussolini to the then-mayor of Castrogiovanni (the city's former name). Mayor Mirello Crisafulli, a former senator, noted that while the document is preserved as a record of institutional responsibility, the administration seeks to distance itself from the political figure who signed it. The centennial serves as a platform for the current administration to advocate for increased political weight, services, and central importance for the province within Sicily.
