Enna officials revive international airport project in central Sicily

Local mayors and the President of the Libero Consorzio Comunale di Enna, Piero Capizzi, have renewed discussions regarding the development of an international airport in central Sicily. The proposed site is located on a 12-square-kilometer area between Catenanuova and Centuripe.

The project aims to create a strategic aeronautical hub to support regional economy and tourism, particularly as a contingency for the Catania-Fontanarossa airport, which frequently faces flight disruptions due to Etna's volcanic activity. A feasibility study conducted by Università Kore has provided a foundation for the plan, which includes an international runway and a specialized aircraft maintenance hangar. Such maintenance facilities are noted to be rare in Italy, with similar structures currently existing only in cities like Paris and Berlin.

Proponents suggest the infrastructure could be integrated with new railway networks and developed through a public-private consortium. The initiative seeks to leverage the central Mediterranean location of the Enna territory to improve regional connectivity and economic development.
