Tunisian opposition leaders face health issues in prison

Tunisian opposition leaders Rached Ghannouchi and Ahmed Nejib Chebbi are facing health challenges while in detention.

Ghannouchi, the 85-year-old leader of the Ennahdha movement, was returned to Mornaguia Civil Prison on Monday evening following a hospital stay that began on July 29. His legal team reported that his health is currently stable, though he has experienced weakness. During his recent hospitalization, his defense team stated he was kept in total isolation and denied access to family, lawyers, and news updates, which led him to initiate a hunger strike.

Ahmed Nejib Chebbi, leader of the National Salvation Front, is also reportedly suffering from health issues exacerbated by high temperatures in prison. His daughter and lawyer, Haifa Chaibi, stated that he remains in high spirits despite his condition. She noted that the prison administration is attempting to monitor his health within its current capabilities.
