Enova funds circular steel project using decommissioned ships
Enova has granted up to 244 million NOK in support to Nordic Circles and Alsaker Stål to establish a circular value chain for steel. The project aims to extract, clean, quality-assure, and recertify steel from decommissioned ships for use in new buildings.
This initiative, described as the largest circular project supported by Enova to date, seeks to make the reuse of ship steel a competitive alternative to new steel. The process will utilize AI-based planning tools, automation, and new cutting and cleaning methods to improve scalability and efficiency.
Climate and Environment Minister Sigrun Aasland noted that using steel from old ships can significantly reduce carbon emissions from construction, as steel production accounts for up to 25 percent of emissions in building construction. The project aims to create new jobs in Norway and provide the European steel industry with a reliable local source of recycled material.
