Enpal pushes C&I solar expansion in Germany amid cost‑model debates
Enpal has teamed up with the steel‑construction specialist Roof+ to build an 11.5‑megawatt solar carport on the Messeparkplatz P10 in Essen. The installation, expected to generate about 11.5 GWh of electricity per year, will supply the city's utility, EVV, and marks the start of a strategic partnership aimed at scaling Enpal’s commercial‑and‑industrial (C&I) photovoltaic business. The firms plan to replicate the model on parking and logistics sites, with Enpal targeting the role of Germany’s leading EPC provider for the segment. Franz Martin‑Mayeur, head of Enpal’s business unit, said the partnership opens “a large area of untapped potential in Germany.”
Alongside the expansion, Enpal’s long‑term rental model for residential solar systems has drawn criticism for its total cost. Analysts note that while monthly payments are spread over up to 20 years, the cumulative amount can reach €50‑60 k, compared with a €20‑30 k cash purchase from regional installers. Consumer groups argue the higher price reflects financing, service and binding customers to Enpal’s ecosystem. The debate highlights a tension between convenience and overall affordability as Germany’s solar market grows.
