Enrique Inzunza faces petition for Senate resignation over cartel allegations
Nearly 20,000 citizens have signed a digital petition via Change.org demanding the resignation of Mexican Senator Enrique Inzunza Cázares. The initiative, represented by Vania Pérez, former president of the National Anticorruption System, seeks to have the signatures delivered to the Senate of the Republic next week.
The petition follows allegations from the United States Department of Justice implicating Inzunza in ties with the Sinaloa Cartel. Proponents of the movement argue that Inzunza should step down so that investigations in both Mexico and the United States can proceed without the legal protections afforded by his constitutional immunity.
Inzunza, who recently reappeared in the Senate after 124 days following the U.S. indictment, has transitioned from the Morena party to becoming an independent senator. While organizers have attempted to coordinate with Senate President Higinio Martínez and various parliamentary coordinators to formally present the request, they report that leadership has yet to respond to the request for an audience.
