Enrique López, Asturian industrialist and former senator, dies at 103

Enrique López, a prominent Asturian entrepreneur and former senator, has passed away at the age of 103 in Bustapena, Villanueva de Oscos. His funeral was held at the Church of Santa María, attended by numerous community members, family, and local officials.

López was a significant figure in the industrial history of Asturias. He founded Confecciones Gijón, which became famous for producing ‘Ike’ shirts, named after Dwight D. Eisenhower. At its peak, the factory employed approximately 700 people and exported products internationally. Following the decline of the textile sector, he founded Industrias Lácteas Monteverde, a dairy company known for its cheese production that continues to represent the region.

In addition to his business ventures, López served as a Senator for the Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD) in 1979. Local leaders from the Oscos region praised his lifelong commitment to the development of his home territory and his dedication to the community.
