Enrique Riera reports 20% annual drop in crime in Paraguay

Paraguayan Interior Minister Enrique Riera reported that crime rates have decreased by approximately 20% annually during his tenure. He stated that current crime figures are nearly half of what they were in August 2023 when he assumed office.

Riera noted that the police budget has grown to exceed USD 400 million per year. He also highlighted the expansion of the 'Linces' special unit, which has grown from 900 to 1,800 members. Regarding institutional integrity, the minister asserted that police promotions and changes are handled by the institutional command of the Qualifications Tribunal rather than political figures, despite pressure from various political sectors.
