US Ambassador defends USMCA and praises Mexican Navy rescue in Ensenada

US Ambassador to Mexico Ronald D. Johnson has described the USMCA as ‘irreplaceable’ for North American economic integration. Speaking at the North Capital Forum 2026 in Mexico City, Johnson emphasized that the deep commercial ties and geographic proximity between Mexico, the United States, and Canada create a framework that transcends simple government agreements.

Johnson also highlighted the importance of using new technologies, such as artificial intelligence, to streamline legitimate trade and border transit. He advocated for increased cooperation to combat criminal organizations, suggesting the use of financial sanctions to disrupt their resources.

In a separate security development, the Mexican Navy (Semar) rescued 45 Mexican nationals, including three minors, who were being illegally transported toward the United States in two yachts near Ensenada, Baja California. The operation resulted in the seizure of approximately 1,850 liters of diesel and the arrest of five suspects. Ambassador Johnson praised the operation, stating that ‘stopping illegal migration and human trafficking saves lives.’

Additionally, a labor dispute involving the Akwel Juárez plant in Chihuahua was resolved under the USMCA framework. Following a complaint regarding violations of freedom of association, the U.S. Trade Representative ordered the resumption of import liquidations after the company implemented corrective measures, including reinstating workers and restructuring human resources management.
