ENT Specialist Warns of Risks Linked to Prolonged Hoarseness

ENT specialist Prof. Dr. Selmin Karataylı Özgürsoy warns that hoarseness lasting longer than two to three weeks should not be dismissed as a temporary ailment and requires medical consultation. She emphasizes that smokers, in particular, should have prolonged hoarseness investigated thoroughly.

Individuals whose professions require heavy vocal use—such as teachers, vocal artists, religious officials, and call center employees—are at higher risk for vocal diseases. Diagnostic methods include detailed examinations, voice analysis to measure pitch, volume, and quality, and endoscopic examinations to evaluate the structure and vibration of the vocal cords. These tools help determine if the issue stems from incorrect usage, vocal cord nodules, benign lesions, or more serious conditions.

Voice therapy is described as more than just resting the voice; it aims to improve healthy and efficient vocal use through proper breathing techniques and reducing the load on the vocal cords. For certain conditions like vocal cord nodules, surgery may not always be necessary, as therapy programs can be tailored to the individual's profession and daily habits.
