Entel activates emergency connectivity measures in northern Chile
Telecommunications company Entel has implemented emergency measures to maintain connectivity for residents affected by alluvium and heavy rains in northern Chile. Through its ‘Primera Respuesta’ program, the company has temporarily restored mobile and fixed services for customers with outstanding debts and suspended service cuts for unpaid bills for a seven-day period starting August 18.
The measures specifically target the communes of Iquique, Taltal, Tocopilla, Antofagasta, and Mejillones. Additionally, Entel has expanded its free emergency satellite SMS service to include the regions of Arica y Parinacota, Tarapacá, and Antofagasta.
To utilize the satellite connection, users must have VoLTE and roaming activated, be outside terrestrial coverage, and have a clear view of the sky. The company recommends that users activate power-saving modes and prioritize text messaging over voice or video calls to conserve battery life and reduce network congestion during the climate emergency.
