Enterprise AI Agent Oversight Becomes Infrastructure Priority
Enterprises are rapidly adopting agentic AI systems that can act autonomously across trading, compliance, client service and operations. The surge in autonomous agents has created a governance challenge, prompting a shift from traditional policy‑based controls to infrastructure‑level oversight. Two main approaches are emerging: a vendor‑agnostic control plane that governs agents across platforms, and platform‑specific orchestration frameworks that keep agents within a single ecosystem.
Research forecasts the global agentic AI market to grow at a 50.6% compound annual growth rate through 2029, reaching about $45 billion. Leading technology providers such as IBM (watsonx Orchestrate), Salesforce (Agent Fabric), ServiceNow (AI Control Tower) and Boomi (Enterprise Platform) are introducing control‑plane solutions to provide visibility, policy enforcement and cross‑vendor interoperability. However, a debate continues over whether a unified control plane or siloed orchestration best mitigates the mounting institutional risk.
The transition from conversational AI to actionable agents removes the human review loop, turning governance from a soft compliance issue into a hard infrastructure problem. Institutions must now be able to prove agent authorizations, restrict prohibited actions and retain clear audit trails, or risk large‑scale errors that can occur at machine speed without adequate oversight.
