Enterprise content debt costs global companies $4.63 trillion

Research conducted by Storyblok in collaboration with FT Longitude reveals that content debt—defined as outdated, poorly structured, or unoptimized digital content—is costing global enterprises an estimated $4.63 trillion. This figure accounts for both the direct spending required to fix content and the revenue at risk due to mismanagement.

The rise of AI-driven search has intensified the issue, as AI models may use outdated information, leading to brand misrepresentation or exclusion from search results. On average, surveyed companies with at least $1 billion in annual revenue face $663.4 million in content debt, with 5.9% of annual revenue at risk.

Executives report that managing this volume of content is increasingly a technical challenge rather than a creative one. Approximately 78% of surveyed leaders acknowledge that their organizations hold more digital content than they can realistically keep accurate and relevant, while 69% view the lack of content visibility as a significant compliance risk.
