Enterprise governance models diverge for autonomous agents
As organizations integrate autonomous agents, a strategic divide has emerged between two primary governance architectures: identity-centric security and process-based observability.
The identity-first model, supported by companies like Microsoft and Okta, treats agents as privileged entities similar to human employees. This approach focuses on securing the non-human identity to prevent unauthorized access, utilizing frameworks where guardian agents act as moderators to ensure actions align with predefined policies.
In contrast, the observability-first model treats agentic activity as a series of transparent, reversible processes. This philosophy shifts the focus from the actor to the action itself. Experts note that while security and identity are related, they are not interchangeable; security concerns what an agent is allowed to do, while identity concerns the agent's provenance and authority from the moment of its creation.
