Enterprise technology shifts toward sovereign clouds and distributed availability
Enterprise technology is undergoing a significant shift toward distributed high availability and digital sovereignty. EDB recently marked 10 years of its distributed PostgreSQL high availability project, which has evolved from an open-source replication tool into a platform designed to prevent downtime for critical services like global payment processing.
Simultaneously, a trend known as ‘geopatriation’ is emerging. Driven by geopolitical tensions, Gartner predicts that sovereign-cloud infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) spending will reach $80.4 billion by 2026, a 30.5% increase from 2025. This shift involves migrating workloads from global public clouds to localized, sovereign clouds to ensure greater control over data, operations, and technology. Experts suggest that true digital sovereignty requires enterprises to look beyond simple data residency to ensure they maintain administrative and operational independence from foreign jurisdictions.
