Entre Ríos authorities confirm first detection of Red Palm Weevil

Authorities in Entre Ríos, Argentina, have confirmed the first detection of the Red Palm Weevil (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) in the province. The pest was identified near Colonia Elía, along the coast of the Uruguay River in the Uruguay Department.

In response, the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) and the Ministry of Economic Development of Entre Ríos have activated an immediate contingency plan. This includes intensifying active surveillance and monitoring along the Uruguay River coastline, with a specific focus on protected areas and native palm groves to safeguard the yatay palm.

The operational response is being coordinated through a Local Technical Table involving Senasa, the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), the National Parks Administration, El Palmar National Park, and local municipalities. The Red Palm Weevil is a highly destructive invasive species from Southeast Asia capable of affecting more than 35 palm species.
