Entre Ríos develops new nutritional standards for school breakfasts

Authorities in Entre Ríos are developing a new nutritional scheme for school breakfasts. An interinstitutional group, including the provincial government, the College of Nutritionists of Entre Ríos (Conuer), universities, and the Ministry of Health, is analyzing technical product specifications to improve student nutrition.

The proposed changes focus on reducing total sugars, added sugars, and flavorings while increasing the intake of fiber and proteins. The plan also includes the incorporation of fresh foods. To ensure quality, the group is working on a purchasing system designed to guarantee the traceability and control of all breakfast products.

As part of this initiative, the province is conducting a monitoring program in approximately 170 schools in collaboration with the Center for Studies on Food Policy and Economics (Cepea). This study aims to gather data on current student diets to inform future decisions. Additionally, the government announced the creation of a dedicated nutrition and food area, which will be managed through a public competition process. A technical diagnosis is expected to be finalized by November.
