Argentina healthcare and retiree sectors face crisis
Various sectors in Argentina are reporting severe economic and social distress. The Colegio de Médicos de la Provincia de Buenos Aires has warned that the PAMI healthcare system is nearing collapse due to chronic underfunding, unpaid debts to medical providers, and outdated payment modules. This crisis is driving a surge in demand at public hospitals, with some facilities reporting a 52.5% increase in emergency room visits from PAMI affiliates.
Retirees and pensioners are also facing significant hardships. The Federación de Jubilados y Pensionados Provinciales de Entre Ríos stated that recent income adjustments are insufficient to cover the rising cost of living, leading to increased debt. Similarly, municipal workers and health professionals are organizing protests to demand wage increases that align with the actual cost of living and to end labor precarity.
In the health sector, workers are calling for urgent action to address critical shortages of medical supplies, inadequate coverage for essential medicines, and the lack of administrative staff in regional delegations.
