Entre Ríos school dining hall controversy over wine purchase
A controversy has emerged in Entre Ríos, Argentina, regarding the use of public funds intended for school meals. Expense reports from May for the Escuela Técnica N°1 'Juan Domingo Perón' in San José de Feliciano revealed the purchase of a 1.125-liter bottle of red wine for 57,000 pesos.
The school dining hall, which serves 191 people, reported total expenses of approximately 2.9 million pesos during that period. The wine purchase was listed alongside standard food items such as tomato puree, lentils, rice, and vegetables. The Dirección de Comedores noted the purchase in its records, requesting an explanation for the item.
Provincial Deputy María Elena Romero stated that the incident is documented in an invoice presented to the provincial state. She argued that the event highlights flaws in the current decentralized management system, where individual establishments administer their own acquisitions. Romero advocated for a centralized purchasing system to better control prices, ensure product suitability, and guarantee that resources are used exclusively for student nutrition.
