Entre Ríos school feeding program faces scrutiny over nutrition and fraud

Authorities in Entre Ríos, Argentina, have revealed significant irregularities in the provincial school feeding program. Official records from various schools in cities such as Concordia, Colón, and Gualeguaychú show inconsistent and inadequate breakfasts, ranging from single pieces of fruit to meals consisting only of tea and bread without solid food.

Government officials reported that audits uncovered the misuse of funds, including the purchase of cigarettes and household appliances with money intended for student nutrition. Investigations also identified collusion between certain officials and suppliers to divert resources.

In response to these systemic failures, the Colegio de Nutricionistas de Entre Ríos has raised concerns regarding the nutritional value of the new food plan proposed by the government and the company Teknofood. Josefina Martínez Garbino, president of the College, warned that the current approach could create a future public health crisis. She criticized the lack of transparency, noting that the Ministry and Teknofood have not provided nutritional composition data for the proposed foods despite formal requests for information.
