Argentina Senate debates 'Súper RIGI' investment regime

The Argentine Senate is entering the final stages of debating the 'Súper RIGI', a new investment incentive regime designed by the Ministry of Economy to attract large-scale projects in frontier technologies. Unlike the original RIGI, this version targets mega-investments of at least 1,000 million dollars in sectors such as artificial intelligence, biotechnology, mining, and digital infrastructure.

To attract these industries, the government proposes providing 30 years of fiscal, customs, and exchange rate stability. However, the initiative has faced significant pushback. More than 1,000 academics, scientists, and technology experts have signed an open letter to the Senate warning of the potential risks. They argue the regime represents a 'renunciation of the right to regulate strategic sectors' for an entire generation, noting that it lacks requirements for local job creation or technology transfer.

Critics also raise concerns regarding the environmental impact of large-scale technological infrastructures and the potential loss of provincial fiscal autonomy. The government maintains the project is essential to positioning Argentina as a regional leader in high-tech investment.
