Entre Ríos teachers' union urges province to halt pension reform

The teachers’ union SADOP in Argentina’s Entre Ríos province submitted an open letter to the provincial lower house, asking deputies to stop a pension reform that has already received partial approval in the upper chamber. The union argues that the proposal treats the pension system as a fiscal adjustment tool, linking teachers’ retirement benefits to the larger state contribution pool and removing the automatic link between active salaries and pension updates.

Key provisions criticised by SADOP include a mandatory “solidarity contribution” starting at 19 % and decreasing over time, an additional 3 % personal contribution on active salaries, and a change in the calculation of the initial pension from the highest‑earning period to an average of the last 15 years. The union contends these measures would substantially reduce teachers’ pension replacement rates and impose undue financial burdens on both retirees and current workers.
