Entrepreneurship trends show solo business density in US and scaling success in Australia

New data regarding the solo-business economy in the United States highlights geographic trends in startup formation. A report analyzing 30 major U.S. metro areas found that Miami leads the Side-Hustle Capital Index with 2,214 nonemployer businesses per 10,000 residents. Southern cities, including Orlando, Atlanta, Houston, Tampa, Dallas, and Washington, dominate the density rankings. The report distinguishes between Volume capitals, such as Miami and Orlando, which feature high density but below-median receipts, and other economic types based on revenue and sustainability.

In Australia, the evolution of small businesses is highlighted through the success of Smart50 Awards alumni. For example, The Little Potion Co, founded by sisters Alicia Gordon and Jacinta Evans, transitioned from a backyard operation to a warehouse-based business with over 200 Australian stockists, including THE ICONIC. The company recently secured a $400,000 investment offer following a national television appearance.
