Enugu and Ebonyi states launch livestock sector revitalization projects
Nigerian states Enugu and Ebonyi are implementing major initiatives to revitalize their livestock sectors through professional recruitment and infrastructure development.
In Enugu, the state government has hired over 160 veterinary and paraveterinary professionals, including doctors and laboratory scientists. This recruitment aims to revive 17 veterinary clinics across various local government areas and transition livestock production from subsistence to a commercialized sector. The initiative is part of the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES).
In Ebonyi, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has launched a project to revive a 60-year-old abandoned veterinary center in Izhianmbo. The development spans 295 hectares and is expected to create approximately 2,000 jobs. The facility is planned to include a veterinary college, modern abattoirs, a hospital, and grazing reserves with a capacity for 2,000 herds, alongside specialized farming enclaves.
