Enugu building collapse kills one and leaves several trapped
A four-storey building under construction collapsed in the Independence Layout area of Enugu on Sunday morning, September 13, 2026. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed that one male victim has been recovered from the rubble, while several others remain trapped.
Preliminary investigations suggest the collapse was caused by structural defects. The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) had previously sealed the site due to faulty column distribution and improper connection of columns to the foundation. Officials noted that construction activities appeared to have continued despite the sealing, involving tasks such as the installation of air-conditioning ducts and pipes.
Emergency rescue teams, including NEMA, the Enugu State Emergency Management Agency, and the Nigeria Police Force, are currently conducting search and rescue operations using excavators to clear debris and locate any remaining victims.
