Enugu City International Marathon concludes with Kenyan and Ethiopian victories
The second edition of the Enugu City International Marathon concluded in Enugu, Nigeria, featuring elite athletes from across the continent. In the 42km male category, Kenya’s Edwin Kipyego secured victory with a time of 02:20:38, earning $15,000 and a gold medal. Ethiopia’s Zenebe Aberu claimed the female crown in the same distance.
In the 10km race, Nigerian runners Gang James Boyi and Obadih Vivian won their respective categories, with Boyi taking the top prize of ₦3,000,000. The event drew over 3,000 participants and was organized by the Enugu State Government in partnership with Nilayo Sports Management.
Enugu State Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Lloyd Ike Ekweremadu Jnr, stated that the marathon is a central component of Governor Peter Mbah’s strategy to revitalize sports and establish Enugu as a major international tourism and sporting hub in Africa. The involvement of World Athletics officials was noted as a sign of the event's growing quality and seriousness.
