Enugu court remands man over video of political meeting attack
An Enugu East Magistrate's Court in Nkwo Nike has remanded 45-year-old Ani Chidi in prison custody following charges of cybercrime and criminal defamation. The Enugu State Police Command arraigned Chidi on three counts related to the recording and online distribution of a video depicting an attack on members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) during a political meeting in Obuoffia Awkunanaw on September 12, 2026.
The prosecution alleges that Chidi falsely identified three individuals—Ani Nnabuike, Solomon Ifeanyi, and Monday Anninwe—as participants in the armed group that disrupted the meeting. The charge sheet further claims Chidi threatened to kill Nnabuike and his family through social media platforms, causing Nnabuike to fear public attacks. The charges fall under the Cybercrime Act of 2015, as amended in 2024.
The NDC has strongly criticized the legal action, claiming the police are targeting a witness to silence him while failing to prosecute those responsible for the actual violence. The party alleged that the charges are trumped-up and called for an independent investigation into the Obuoffia incident.
