Enugu Governor Peter Mbah reports massive increase in water production

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has announced that the state’s daily water production capacity has increased from two million litres to 120 million litres. Speaking at a town hall meeting held at the International Conference Centre in Enugu, Mbah detailed the administration’s efforts to address persistent water shortages in the Enugu metropolis.

The governor noted that the state requires approximately 80 million litres of water daily to meet resident needs. To achieve the current production levels, the administration reactivated the previously dormant Ninth Mile water scheme and front-loaded the procurement of critical equipment, such as large pumps, prior to his inauguration.

Despite the increase in production, Mbah acknowledged that distribution remains a challenge due to ageing infrastructure, including brittle pipes, asbestos pipes, and burst sections. He also cited encroached water corridors and obstructed pipelines. Rather than demolishing buildings located along affected routes, the government has opted to develop new distribution networks and has divided the Enugu metropolis into 14 zones to facilitate household supply. Additionally, the state has procured horizontal drilling equipment to install underground pipes while minimizing damage to roads.
