Enugu Governor Peter Mbah urged to implement N32,000 minimum pension

The Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Enugu State Council, has appealed to Governor Peter Mbah to urgently adopt the pension review linked to the new national minimum wage. Retirees in Enugu are reportedly receiving as little as N447 a month, far below the proposed N32,000 minimum pension.

The union highlighted the state’s strong fiscal performance – N406.77 billion internally generated revenue in 2025 and ambitious targets for 2026 – arguing that the state can afford the increase. Chairman Ikechukwu Ekere noted that pension administration has improved under the current administration, with arrears cleared for many local‑government and primary‑school retirees, but warned that gratuities have not been paid since 2010.

The pensioners are seeking the N32,000 floor to alleviate the impact of soaring inflation and rising living costs on thousands of elderly citizens.
