Enugu Health Commissioner addresses rise in kidney and cardiovascular disease reports
Enugu State Commissioner for Health, Prof. George Ugwu, has addressed concerns regarding a perceived surge in kidney and cardiovascular diseases in the region. He clarified that the increase in reported cases is primarily due to heightened public awareness, better access to health information, and a rise in residents seeking medical examinations, which has made previously undetected cases more visible.
While dismissing fears of an uncontrolled outbreak, Ugwu warned that lifestyle choices remain significant risk factors. He identified poor nutrition, obesity, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, and the indiscriminate use of medicines as major drivers of these health complications.
To mitigate these risks, the commissioner urged residents to reduce their consumption of sugary, salty, oily, and highly processed foods. He advocated for a return to nutritious, locally produced meals over expensive packaged alternatives and advised individuals, particularly those aged 40 and above, to monitor calorie intake and maintain a healthy body weight.
