Enugu political violence sparks calls for international sanctions
Political violence has escalated in Enugu State, Nigeria, following an armed attack on a Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ward meeting in Obuoffia, Nkanu West Local Government Area. During the incident, which occurred on September 12, 2026, several party members sustained gunshot wounds. NDC governorship candidate Sir Chinyeaka Ohaa visited the victims and pledged to cover their medical expenses, calling for an urgent investigation by the State Police Command.
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused the Enugu State Government of enabling such violence to stifle opposition groups. IPOB reiterated its decision to boycott upcoming elections, claiming that political gatherings for the PDP and NDC have been targeted by thugs. While the All Progressives Congress (APC) has denied responsibility, IPOB alleged that the pattern of disruptions is a deliberate attempt to control the political space.
In response to the violence, the Enugu chapter of the NDC has petitioned international bodies, including the United Nations, the African Union, and the European Union. The party is calling for international sanctions, such as visa restrictions and travel bans, against individuals found responsible for the attacks. The NDC specifically alleged that a Senior Special Assistant to the Nkanu West Local Government Chairman led the disruption and criticized the local council chairman for allegedly showing solidarity with suspects.
